the craft. the work that's not writing

The start of a new month always leaves me so optimistic. It feels like the possibilities are endless. So, I often take some time to both reflect and look forward. Recently, someone talked about the importance of simply setting aside time to think and I feel as writers we undervalue this. Time to think, ask questions, and reflect can all be more crucial to our work than we think.

Everything starts as an idea or an exploration and those are the things that lead us in our work. Whether it’s exploring how grief has affected us or a conversation about childhood card games. It’s imperative that as writers we learn how to be present.

So, this week, I want you to take some time if you can, to reflect on the prompts below:

  1. What went really well for me last month?

  2. What do I plan to achieve in August?

  3. What action steps will I need to take to do so?

  4. What’s the most important thing I want to write this month?

  5. What do I want to start, stop, continue? (Word to GG Renee)

  6. August will be …

Never underestimate the power of setting intentions and writing down your reflections. It gives us a moment to slow down. I don’t know about you, but 2021 has been flying by and I’m only just realizing that I need to be a bit more present and think about what’s happening in my world and around me. Every dream I’ve been able to accomplish so far was a thought first that manifested into something tangible. I pray this new month has positively life-changing moments awaiting you.
